Northwest Pottery Collective - Homeschool Program FAQs

Q: What is the NPC’s homeschool program?

A: Our Ceramic Art Program for homeschoolers offers a creative, hands-on learning experience tailored to students ages 5–15. Through guided, process-driven projects and a variety of ceramic techniques, students explore artistic expression, develop fine motor skills, and learn the principles of form, function, and design.

Q: What ages is this program for?

A: Ages 5 through 15.  Students will be divided up into a class with ages 5-10 or 10-15. Ten year olds can be placed where the parent feels is the best fit but be aware that only our 10-15 year old class will include wheel instruction.

Q: What is the difference between the age 5-10 class and the age 10-15 class?

A: The class for kids age 5-10 will be hand building only and will explore techniques appropriate for that age group, including pinch pots, coils, and slab building. The class for kids age 10-15 will include both hand building and wheel throwing, with an emphasis on how wheel throwing and hand building methods compliment and enhance each other.

Q: Can my kids take this class together?

A: We would prefer kids take the class for their respective age group but we can allow older siblings to take the age 5-10 class with a younger sibling if absolutely necessary. However, we will not allow a younger sibling to take the age 10-15 class, as many of the techniques in that class are too advanced for younger kiddos.

Q: Will this class meet the educational requirements for my homeschool program?

A: We will absolutely do our best to meet the educational standards of any homeschool program! If you have any educational needs that you would like us to know about, you must contact us prior to class starting so that we can try to accommodate them.

Q: My child has sensory sensitivities, will this class be ok for them?

A: While the pottery studio can be a noisy and busy place, we strive to make all students comfortable.  Students who have sensitivities to sound are welcome to bring their own noise canceling earmuffs to class.  We have fidget toys available and we take breaks to help when kids need movement. Families are welcome to talk to staff if they want to discuss how we might help make their students feel comfortable.

Q: How will this program adapt as my child gains more ceramics experience?

A: As your child gains confidence in their ceramic skills and abilities, our instructors are able to adapt their lesson plans to continually challenge your child to explore more advanced forms, functions, and methods. There is so much to know, they will never run out of options!
